Exeter - the sunny south west!?!
Exeter - the sunny south west!?!
The second race of the season and again we had a fantastic response to our call for paddlers. 2 boats again and a hell of a lot of red t-shirts. We are being noticed, and not just because of our colour!
Nerves were high once more and after Liverpool we couldn't help feeling that we still had something to prove. Seeded in the first 200, the Dragons felt the benefits of their stirling performance in Liverpool. We won, as expected perhaps, but not as convincingly as we felt we could have. A positive team talk however set the tone of the day and enabled us to learn from our mistakes and build on our strengths. A wise man once said 'Go! Team Awesome Go!' and we responded to this with a resounding 'Ahoy!' that shattered the peace of the damp, dreary air around us.
No, the weather was not great. But we were. 2nd in the 200s, 2nd in the 500s. We had some bling to collect at the end of the day. BA are a little worried. During one warm down I suspected sabotage when 'Chief' (if that really is his name) came to 'congratulate' us. He ruffled all our heads, in an effort to disorientate the team, before lifting up Maggie (our great helm) and threatening to run off with her! Watch out for him in Bristol crew.
The Flies also did us proud and, despite the weather, managed to keep their race spirit and focus throughout the day. Warm ups and warm downs were expertly carried out by various members of the crew (some louder than others!) and a small tent filled with dragonflies became the place to be. It looked warm, but I wasn't invited in. Don't worry though. I am over it. Honest. Sniff.
