Liverpool 09 - What a Start to the Season!!

Liverpool...first race of the season...much anticipation....a few nerves...and HOW MANY WORCESTER DRAGONS??

Never before has Worcester been so well represented at Liverpool, and never before have we had such a fantastic result!!!!

44 paddlers, 2 drummers, 2 helms and a support team of videoers, cheerleaders, runners and cake makers.

It was a typical cold windy day in the north west but our helms weren't phased and both the Dragons and Dragonflies showed what they were made of in the 200m races and raised a few eyebrows.  On to the 500m races and it was time to turn up the heat (if only the weather had responded!).  The Dragonflies had a tough first round draw but put in a solid performance to reach the Bowl semi final.  An amazing performance saw them take 9 seconds off their time and they went into the Bowl Major Final determined to prove themselves.  It was a fantastic close race - I'm not sure how any of the Worcester supporters could speak after all the shouting!- with Amathus Bees clinching it by less than 3/4 of a second!!

The first round of the 500m saw the Dragons in a very close competition with the international Dutch team, only to be beaten on the line by 0.3 of a second!  The time of 2.00.03 placed them as the 5th fastest team on the day and put them into the Cup competition.  The semi was just as close, this time losing out to BA Hurricanes again by 0.3 of a second!!  The Dragons fate was then a Cup Minor Final against who else but the Dutch team and BA - the chance for revenge!  And didn't they take it - winning by a clear head and being (un)officially named (by Ben at least) 'the 4th fastest dragonboat club in the country'! 

It was a geat day all round, and fantastic to see the Dragonflies pick up the first silverware of the season for 2nd place in the Bowl competition.
