It's been all systems go from 7pm on Monday 21st January at the Tolly Centre in Worcester when the competition kicked off for the youth section to create a design for the new boat which has now arrived. All youngsters between 12 and 18 are invited to come along and join the youth section of the club and create a colourful design that will be painted on the boat by the group The group have had 4 weeks to create their own identity for the boat and Monday the 18th was the big night for judging by renowned local artist David Birtwhistle. After a number of workshops to develop some ideas and outline designs, David came along to assess the work and helped to develop some themes for the group to take forward.A good turn out from the contributing youngsters listened intently as David gave the benefit of his experience as an artist who paints local landscapes and famous views of the county. The picture below shows the group gathered around the artwork. He drew parallels with the difficulty of designing material for a wide narrow canvas. Landscapes by definition provide the perfect subject matter. The favoured theme of several identified by David was based on applying the crew name of Severn Spiritz in big and bold characters with an underpinning vibrant backdrop. There's still time to get involved with applying the design to the boat. The group will finalise the winning theme in mid March and put brush to boat towards the end of March. Come along any Sunday morning and get involved with the crew on the water. Club membership for under 18 members is fully funded for 2008 so our unique Sport With Attitude is even more affordable. Look forward to seeing you on the water. Contact Ken at the address below for more information.
More Funding from the Local Network FundWorcester Dragons have secured a generous grant from the Local Network Fund through Community First to support a new youth section at the club. The youth section will have a dedicated boat and equipment to improve access to the water with its light weight. The section has received a boost with recruits from Tolly Torpedoes 1 and Gorse Hill Gladiators who raced in the regatta but all City youngsters aged over 12 are encouraged to get involved in our unique team sport. Competitions are planned to allow the young members to develop their own identity with designs for the boat and accessories. 2008 should see the group racing at a number of National League races if further sponsorship can be secured. If you or your company would like to adopt the team for one or more of the National League events in 2008 (any of 9 across the UK including Worcester) please contact Ken, the youth coordinating team leader - The group normally train alongside and with the open crew from the club but there are special sessions when numbers allow. The sessions include coaching in basic paddling technique followed by some head to head racing between boats if sufficient paddlers come along. Why not come along with a friend and get the buzz from a little Sport With Attitude! The sessions are followed by snacks and refreshments and an opportunity for the participants to tell us what they would like to do in future sessions. Let Ken know if you will be coming along so that we know to expect you.
