Welcome to Worcester Dragons

Worcester Dragons are Worcester's top Dragon Boat racing club. Worcester Dragons currently compete in the BDA national league. We train every Sunday morning (when we are not racing) and Thursday evenings throughout the summer.
Worcester Dragons welcome all ages and abilities and aim to provide appropriate training whether you are looking to compete at the highest level or just out to meet new friends who share a common passion for the sport. We are committed to getting as many people as possible to try the sport. If you are interested in joining us please come and try it at any of our training sessions or contact a committee member for any enquiries.
Worcester Dragons are actively seeking new members for our under 18s crew the Severn Spiritz who we hope to have racing in the junior category of the national league this season. If you know of any youngsters between the ages of 12 and 18 who may like to try it please let them know about the club. Further details are in the Severn Spiritz section of the website.

Worcester Dragons members raced in 6 classes at the weekend securing a haul of trophies and medals.

As well as the Dragons and DragonFlies open crews the club raced in mixed, ladies, seniors, under 18s and also the Breast Cancer Survivors challenge where they came second in both 200m and 500m disciplines. With up to 21 races over the weekend many new faces to the club joined the old hands to cause some upsets at all distances. Batchworth Dragons and Amathus, eventual champions, proved to be too strong for the Dragons but many medals and trophies were missed and won by a fraction of a second. Memorable races for all crews over 1000m - bronze medal, 500m mixed - silver medal and 500m open - fourth by 0.3 seconds after a 6m charge for third in the final 80m of the race. The secret weapon for the club were the hoards of members cheering the racing crew on in the key races, absolutely magnificent.

2011 has heralded a massive increase in membership and competition for places within the club. After their recent exploits in Dublin with a mostly Grand Dragons qualifying crew the club raced in the senior category for the first time absolutely destroying Kingston Royals with clear water in the 500m discipline. The increased number of women members from the reinvigorated Breast Cancer Survivor and supporters initiative has provided sufficient contenders for almost two ladies crews. The ladies faced the challenge of largely international class competition from the other clubs but nevertheless raced with style and commitment - the Worcester Way. The under 18 members provided the core of a Worcester led under 18 crew who triumphed against capable opposition, winning both 200m and 500m grand finals.

After vying with peer group club Exe-Calibre throughout the season the weekend showdown proved that Worcester have the edge for stamina and an explosive finish. There were heroes and heroines over the weekend taking on the massive challenge of race after race with little recovery time but as DragonFlies helm Maggie Inglis commented "Everyone was fantastic!"

Well another race day was upon us, time for round 3 of the National league, I was grateful for the late pick up, how things have changed; I used to believe there was no such thing as 7:30am on a Sunday morning and now I consider it a late start! Off we set, anxious about the day ahead and the change in weather from glorious sunshine to wet, dreary and bleak

We had managed to get together two boats for the event, which was excellent going considering we had so many experienced paddlers away in China and the like.

We knew it would be tough, both boats were light by two paddlers and the weather forecast was for rain. There was no chance of rotation and we couldn’t afford any injuries. At team talk Rob was optimistic as ever; ‘the sun will be coming out later’ we were ready to do our best.

Both the Dragons and the Flies had difficult 200m heats. The Flies were up against ExeCaliber and Crusaders in what turned out to be the hideous lane 3.

In the last 200m for the Flies we were up against ExeCaliber Blades, with a final push and awesome support from the bank we managed to take them, and take almost 4 seconds off our previous time.

It was a similar story in the 500m, conditions and lane draws were tough, but we were committed and showed great spirit. Both teams finished on a high, in their final race the Dragons managed to beat Batchworth, and the last race for Dragonflies was a successful one too, with a win against Notts Challengers.

All in all it was another fantastic day of racing and Rob was right, the sun did come out, there were a lot of faces that were as red as our shirts by the time we were enjoying our post racing pint. Great spirit, great day, Go Worcester!
